BMW M2 Competition Takes Runner-Up at EMMA Australia 2026 | MC Audio Sydney

Some car audio projects are built for customers.

Others become a way to test everything you believe about installation, tuning, integration and sound quality.

Our 2018 BMW M2 Competition F87 became exactly that.

BMW M2 Competition boot with HELIX V EIGHT DSP, V TWO and AMPLIFY amplifiers, custom blue-lit rack and subwoofer.

After weeks of fabrication, installation, acoustic treatment, system integration and precision DSP tuning, MC Audio entered the BMW into the inaugural EMMA Australia Sydney 2026 Sound Quality competition.

The result:

Runner-Up — EMMA Australia Master €8,000

The BMW M2 Competition achieved 366 points, finishing second in the Master €8,000 category at the Sydney event held on 25 October 2026.

For us, the result was important — but the real value was everything that happened before competition day.

This car became a complete development project for MC Audio: a system designed to demonstrate what can be achieved when high-end equipment, custom fabrication, OEM integration, electrical engineering and careful DSP tuning are treated as one complete system rather than separate products.

EMMA Australia's official results confirmed the BMW M2 as Runner-Up in Master €8,000, behind the winning Toyota Prado and ahead of the third-place Tesla Model Y.

What Is EMMA Australia?

EMMA — the European Mobile Media Association — provides an international competition framework for evaluating in-car audio systems.

Rather than simply measuring how loud a system can play, Sound Quality competition evaluates elements such as tonal balance, imaging, staging, system integration and installation quality.

The Master €8,000 category is designed for experienced competitors and industry professionals, with the equipment value controlled through the EMMA value framework.

That made it an ideal category for this project.

The objective was not to build the most expensive system possible.

The objective was to extract as much performance as possible from a carefully selected system while maintaining the engineering standards, reliability and OEM-style integration that we use every day at MC Audio.

Starting With the BMW M2 Competition

BMW platforms are extremely rewarding when properly tuned, but they also present several acoustic challenges.

Speaker locations are largely predetermined by the factory interior. The underseat woofer arrangement must integrate correctly with the front stage and subwoofer. Cabin reflections, seating position and the centre channel can significantly influence staging.

Instead of fighting the vehicle, our approach was to work with the architecture of the BMW.

The system was designed around five main principles:

OEM-style integration, a strong front soundstage, controlled low-frequency reproduction, individual DSP control of the important speaker channels, and full serviceability of the installation.

The result was a fully active system built around Audiotec Fischer technology with BRAX and HELIX loudspeakers.

The Competition Signal Path

For normal vehicle operation, the BMW factory system remained integrated into the installation.

For competition playback, however, we wanted the cleanest and most controlled signal path possible.

The competition source path was:

FiiO M33 R2R → USB digital output → USB PerfectStream → HELIX V EIGHT DSP ULTIMATE

This allowed the HELIX DSP to receive the competition music through a direct digital path before carrying out the crossover, equalisation, time alignment, level control and channel processing required for the system.

The HELIX V EIGHT DSP ULTIMATE became the heart of the complete system.

It combines eight amplified output channels with extensive DSP processing, allowing us to run the most important front speakers actively while also providing processed signals to the additional amplifiers. The current V EIGHT DSP ULTIMATE is available through MC Audio Sydney as part of our high-end HELIX range.

Building the Front Stage

The front soundstage is where the majority of our development time was concentrated.

The left and right high-frequency reproduction is handled by BRAX MATRIX ML28 PRO tweeters.

These are reference-level 4-ohm tweeters designed for fully active DSP systems and high-end multi-amplifier installations. Their role in this BMW was not simply to create more treble, but to deliver clean transient information, fine detail and a stable upper soundstage without becoming aggressive.

The front midrange positions use HELIX Ci7 M100FM-S3 4-inch drivers.

We also used another Ci7 midrange in the factory centre position.

The Ci7 platform was selected because of its combination of efficiency, low distortion and integration flexibility. In our system it allowed vocals and instruments to remain precise while the DSP controlled the relationship between left, centre and right channels.

A dedicated centre tweeter was integrated with the centre midrange to provide additional control over the centre image.

The centre was not designed to pull the entire stage into the dashboard.

Instead, it was carefully processed to support image stability and spatial information while allowing the left and right front stage to remain dominant.

BMW Underseat Bass — The Missing Link

A BMW system cannot be tuned correctly by thinking only about the door speakers and boot subwoofer.

The underseat woofers are critical.

We installed a pair of HELIX Ci5 S200FM-S2 8-inch woofers in the factory underseat locations.

These shallow drivers are designed specifically for applications such as BMW underseat positions and provide the transition between the front midrange system and the dedicated 12-inch subwoofer.

This part of the system was particularly important during tuning.

If the underseat woofers dominate, the front stage becomes heavy and localisable.

If they are too low in level, there is a hole between the midrange speakers and the subwoofer.

Our objective was to make the transition almost disappear.

Centre and Rear Fill

The rear system was deliberately treated as rear fill, not as a second soundstage.

HELIX Ci7 midranges and Ci7 T20FM-SC tweeters were installed in the rear parcel shelf positions and powered separately by the HELIX AMPLIFY 204 DIRECT.

The V EIGHT DSP ULTIMATE supplies the processed signal to the 204 DIRECT, allowing us to control how much rear information enters the cabin.

The rear channels are intentionally subtle.

Their function is to provide ambience and spatial support without pulling vocals or instruments behind the listener.

The HELIX Ci7 T20FM-SC tweeters are part of the COMPOSE i7 platform and are engineered for high-resolution active systems and OEM-style integration.

Dedicated Amplification for the Subwoofer

Low-frequency reproduction was handled separately.

A processed mono signal leaves the HELIX V EIGHT DSP ULTIMATE and feeds the HELIX NEXT V TWO amplifier.

The NEXT V TWO then drives the HELIX IQ W12-DVC2 subwoofer with the dual voice coils configured to present a 1-ohm final load.

The V TWO was selected because the system required substantial low-frequency control and output without sacrificing the compact amplifier layout required for the custom boot rack.

Custom 34-Litre Fibreglass Subwoofer Enclosure

One of the most time-consuming parts of the BMW was something that is almost invisible once the vehicle is complete.

The subwoofer enclosure.

Rather than installing a generic rectangular box in the boot, we used the original BMW left-side trim as the physical reference for the enclosure shape.

A mould was created and the enclosure shell was fabricated in fibreglass.

The fabrication process alone required approximately four to five days.

The enclosure was progressively moulded, reinforced and test-fitted before the front baffle and finishing surfaces were completed.

The final sealed enclosure has an internal volume of approximately 34 litres and houses the HELIX IQ W12-DVC2 12-inch subwoofer.

No additional tuning masses were required for this configuration.

The IQ W12-DVC2 uses dual 2-ohm voice coils and is designed for advanced custom sealed or ported installations, making it particularly suitable for this type of competition-focused project.

Most importantly, the enclosure follows the shape of the BMW boot rather than occupying the entire luggage area.

That philosophy is central to the way we work at MC Audio:

performance should not automatically mean sacrificing the usability or appearance of the vehicle.

Acoustic Treatment — Building a Better Speaker Environment

Premium speakers cannot perform correctly if they are mounted into uncontrolled metal panels.

A substantial part of the project therefore involved acoustic treatment.

The front doors received a multi-layer treatment strategy.

Two treatment layers were applied to the outer door skin, another layer to the inner door structure, and additional treatment was applied to the door trim panel.

The area surrounding the front midrange mounting positions was also treated and sealed to provide a more stable acoustic environment.

Additional treatment was installed around the underseat woofer locations, the rear side structures and the boot area behind the subwoofer enclosure.

STP materials were used throughout selected areas of the vehicle.

The objective was not simply to make the BMW quieter.

The purpose was to reduce unwanted panel resonance and vibration so that the energy produced by the speakers became audible as music rather than being lost into the vehicle structure.

New Speaker Wiring and Serviceable Connections

Another important part of the installation was the wiring.

New dedicated speaker cables were routed through the vehicle for the active system.

Different cable sections were selected according to the electrical requirements of each loudspeaker group.

The BRAX tweeters use approximately 0.75 mm² OFC speaker cable, the Ci7 midrange channels use approximately 1.5 mm² OFC, and the underseat woofer circuits use approximately 2.5 mm² OFC.

The dedicated subwoofer circuit uses heavier OFC speaker cable appropriate for the higher current demand.

All midrange and tweeter connections were terminated using XT60H quick-disconnect connectors.

Each connection was soldered and protected with heat-shrink.

This was not done because the speakers need to be disconnected every day.

It was done because a professional installation should remain serviceable.

Door panels, centre speaker assemblies and rear speaker sections can be removed without cutting or re-splicing the speaker wiring, while polarity remains consistent.

OEM Integration Without Cutting the Factory Loom

The BMW factory integration was retained using a MATCH direct-fit harness.

Rather than cutting into the original BMW wiring loom, the integration harness was modified specifically for our system.

Factory analogue signals were extracted through RCA connections and made available to the HELIX DSP for normal vehicle operation.

This meant we could build an extensively modified competition system while maintaining a clean and reversible relationship with the BMW factory wiring.

It is the same philosophy we apply to customer vehicles:

modify what is necessary, but avoid unnecessary interference with the original vehicle.

The Amplifier Rack

Three amplifiers had to coexist in the boot:

Function Component
Main DSP / front amplification HELIX V EIGHT DSP ULTIMATE
Rear fill amplification HELIX AMPLIFY 204 DIRECT
Subwoofer amplification HELIX NEXT V TWO

Before construction, the amplifiers were physically positioned on a mock-up panel to determine spacing, connector orientation, power distribution and cable routing.

The rack was then test-fitted inside the BMW before the final finish was completed.

Once the wiring, power distribution and amplifier positions were confirmed, the rack was trimmed and covered.

A custom finishing panel with viewing windows and integrated blue illumination completed the boot installation.

The goal was not to create a show-car installation that dominated the vehicle.

The goal was to make the equipment visible when required while keeping the overall boot clean, functional and professionally finished.

Power Distribution and Grounding

A high-performance audio system is only as reliable as its electrical foundation.

The main positive supply uses 2/0 AWG cable from the BMW battery to a 200 A main fuse installed approximately 30 cm from the battery positive terminal.

From the protected main supply, power is distributed through the amplifier rack and individual 4 AWG feeds supply the three amplifiers.

The ground architecture uses a dedicated 0 AWG connection from the BMW chassis to a common ground distribution block, followed by three individual 4 AWG ground cables to the amplifiers.

The original BMW Intelligent Battery Sensor architecture remains intact.

The electrical design and documentation were also prepared with the EMMA installation requirements in mind, including fuse positioning, cable protection, terminations, service access and documentation of components that become hidden after the vehicle is reassembled.

Three Days of DSP Tuning

Installing the equipment was only part of the project.

The system then required approximately three days of DSP equalisation and calibration to bring the complete system into competition-ready condition.

This process involved far more than adjusting an EQ curve.

Every loudspeaker interacts with the cabin differently.

We worked through channel levels, crossover relationships, time alignment, phase behaviour, centre integration, underseat bass integration, subwoofer transition and tonal balance.

Changes that appear small on a computer screen can completely alter the perceived position of a vocalist or the depth of the stage.

The objective was not to make the system artificially bright, bass-heavy or immediately impressive.

We wanted the BMW to reproduce recordings naturally, with a stable image, believable depth and controlled energy throughout the frequency range.

Then Came the Final Week

  • Even after the major fabrication and tuning work was complete, the BMW was not finished.
  • Nearly another week was spent refining details.
  • Cable presentation.
  • Component access.
  • Trim alignment.
  • Noise checks.
  • Final gain verification.
  • Profiles.
  • Mechanical inspection.
  • Listening.
  • More listening.
  • And more small adjustments.
  • Competition is very good at exposing details that are easy to ignore in a normal installation.
  • That became one of the most valuable parts of this project for MC Audio.
  • Every improvement developed for this BMW becomes knowledge that can be applied to future customer vehicles.

The Result — Runner-Up in Our First EMMA Australia Event

On Sunday, 25 October 2026, the BMW M2 Competition entered the first EMMA-sanctioned Sydney competition.

The Master €8,000 category was sponsored by Audiotec Fischer and brought together serious Sound Quality builds from across the event.

Our BMW finished with 366 points, securing Runner-Up in the category.

Of course, we would always like to win.

But for our first EMMA Australia competition, second place confirmed something more important:

the engineering direction works.

It also gave us an objective benchmark for where the system is strong and where we can continue improving.

That is exactly what competition should do.

What This Means for an MC Audio Customer

You do not need an EMMA competition car to benefit from this work.

Most customers who visit MC Audio are not asking us to build a competition system.

They are asking for something much simpler:

“I want my BMW to sound better.”

“I want proper bass without losing my boot.”

“I want more detail but I don't want the car modified everywhere.”

“I already have Harman Kardon, but it doesn't sound the way I expected.”

“I want a system that is tuned properly, not just louder.”

The process we developed through this BMW applies directly to those vehicles.

Correct signal integration.

Correct amplifier selection.

Proper speaker installation.

Acoustic treatment where it actually matters.

Custom fabrication when necessary.

And most importantly, DSP calibration carried out after the hardware has been installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can MC Audio build a system similar to the EMMA BMW M2 for my BMW?

Yes. The exact system does not need to be duplicated. We normally design the system around your vehicle, factory audio configuration, music preferences, budget and how much modification you are comfortable with.

A customer system may use fewer channels, a smaller amplifier, different speakers or a hidden subwoofer while still benefiting from the same installation and tuning principles.

Do I need BRAX and multiple HELIX amplifiers to get good sound?

No.

The BMW M2 was built for competition and development, so the architecture is more complex than most road-car upgrades.

Excellent results can be achieved with a well-selected MATCH or HELIX DSP amplifier, upgraded speakers, correct integration and professional calibration.

System design matters more than simply purchasing the largest number of components.

Can you keep the BMW factory head unit and controls?

In many applications, yes.

Our preference is to retain OEM controls, functionality and appearance wherever practical and integrate the aftermarket audio equipment behind the factory system.

The exact solution depends on the BMW generation and factory audio architecture.

How important is DSP tuning?

Extremely important.

Modern premium vehicles have complex speaker positions and cabin acoustics.

A DSP allows us to manage crossover points, speaker levels, timing, frequency response and system integration.

Installing premium speakers without correctly calibrating the complete system can leave a significant amount of performance unused.

Do you build custom subwoofer enclosures?

Yes.

We can design custom enclosures where the vehicle and project justify it, including fibreglass solutions that use otherwise wasted areas of a boot.

The objective is normally to achieve the required acoustic volume while preserving as much usable space and OEM appearance as possible.

Ready to Upgrade Your BMW?

If you own a BMW and the factory sound system does not match the driving experience, we can design an upgrade around your vehicle rather than forcing a generic package into it.

From a discreet DSP and speaker upgrade to a fully active HELIX / BRAX system, custom subwoofer enclosure and detailed DSP calibration, the starting point is understanding what you actually want to improve.
