The new Land Rover Defender is an impressive vehicle in almost every respect. But a premium badge and a factory-branded sound system do not automatically mean the listening experience will suit every owner.
This 2026 Land Rover Defender 110 arrived at MC Audio Australia equipped with the factory Meridian sound system after the Focal team contacted us regarding a client who was looking for a significant improvement in sound quality.
The owner had only recently taken delivery of the vehicle, but he was already disappointed with the way the factory system performed.
Having worked on multiple Land Rover and Defender audio projects previously — including subwoofer upgrades, acoustic treatment and OEM-integrated audio improvements — we already knew that this vehicle would require much more than simply replacing a few speakers.
What Was Wrong With the Factory Meridian System?
After speaking with the owner and listening to the vehicle, his concerns became very clear.
One of his biggest complaints was the bass response.
The low frequencies felt hollow and lacked real weight and foundation. Instead of producing controlled, extended bass, the system gave the impression of a relatively small driver being pushed hard inside an enclosure to create more low-frequency output than it could naturally deliver.
This is one of the reasons we often recommend a dedicated subwoofer solution when upgrading these vehicles.
A proper subwoofer is not simply about making the system louder. Its job is to reproduce the lowest frequencies properly, allowing the rest of the speaker system to operate more naturally.
The owner also described the Meridian system as sounding tinny and excessively bright, particularly through higher notes.
The result was a system that could produce plenty of sound but was not giving him the natural, balanced and enjoyable presentation he expected from a vehicle of this level.
Choosing the Focal Flax Evo Upgrade
We discussed several different speaker packages with the customer, including different levels from both Focal and HELIX.
For this first stage of the project, he selected our Focal Flax Evo package.

The complete upgrade involved 10 speakers, professionally supplied, adapted and installed into the Defender while retaining the vehicle's original integration.
The Focal Flax Evo range was a particularly good choice for what the customer wanted.
Rather than chasing excessive volume, the objective was improved musicality — better clarity, a more natural midrange, improved detail and a more balanced overall presentation.
Sound Deadening a Land Rover Defender Is Not a Quick Job
Before concentrating on the speakers, we first had to work on the acoustic environment of the vehicle.
Soundproofing a modern Land Rover Defender properly requires patience.
Removing the door trims and accessing the internal structure without damaging clips, trims, wiring or factory components takes considerable time.
For this installation we allocated five days.
The first day was largely dedicated to carefully dismantling the vehicle and gaining proper access to the areas we needed to treat.
Over approximately the first two days, we completed the acoustic treatment.
The objective was not simply to cover the doors with material.
Proper sound deadening creates a more stable environment for the speaker to operate in, reduces resonance through the panels and helps prevent energy from the speaker being lost through vibration.
This becomes particularly important when installing a higher-performance speaker such as the Focal Flax Evo.
Custom Speaker and Crossover Integration
Once the acoustic treatment was complete, the next stage was the speaker installation.
The following two days were dedicated to adapting and mounting the Focal speakers and integrating the crossover networks correctly within the Defender.
Modern premium vehicles require a very different approach from traditional speaker replacement.
Mounting depth, factory locations, wiring, moisture protection, crossover placement and trim clearance all need to be considered before the vehicle can be reassembled.
Our objective was to improve performance while maintaining an installation that remained visually OEM.
No unnecessary modifications. No exposed equipment. No shortcuts.
The Result
After completing the installation and reassembling the Defender, the improvement was immediately noticeable.
The system became considerably more natural.
Vocals gained body and realism.
The midrange became more controlled and present.
The top end remained detailed but without the same aggressive or overly bright character the customer had originally described.
Most importantly, the entire system felt more balanced and harmonious inside the Defender.
That was exactly what the owner had asked us to achieve.
Rather than simply making the system louder, the Focal upgrade gave the music a more convincing and enjoyable presentation.
But This Defender Project Isn't Finished
There is still one part of the system we deliberately haven't addressed yet: the bass.
From our first conversation, the factory low-frequency performance was one of the owner's biggest concerns.
We have already discussed the next stage of the project, and the Defender is booked to return to MC Audio Australia in approximately three months for a dedicated subwoofer upgrade.
That stage will allow us to give the system the low-frequency extension and foundation that the factory configuration is currently missing.
We'll document that next chapter as well.
