Porsche 911 Targa 992 2024 Bose Audio Upgrade – A Two-Stage HELIX and MATCH Transformation

This 2024 Porsche 911 Targa 992 arrived with the factory Bose sound system, but its owner wanted a far more detailed, powerful and emotionally engaging listening experience. Across two carefully developed stages, MC Audio upgraded the Porsche with HELIX Ci7 speakers, MATCH DSP amplification, extensive soundproofing, a customised sealed subwoofer enclosure and subtle OEM-style ambient lighting.

Porsche 911 Targa 992 2024 Bose Audio Upgrade – A Two-Stage HELIX and MATCH Transformation

A Porsche 911 Targa is already an extraordinary driving experience.

The engine note, removable roof design, timeless shape and connection between the driver and the vehicle make the 992-generation Targa one of the most distinctive models in the Porsche range.

However, even a premium factory Bose sound system can leave an enthusiastic listener wanting more.

This 2024 Porsche 911 Targa 992 belongs to Dimitry, a returning MC Audio client who had previously trusted us with the audio system in his BMW M2. For that project, we installed a combination of HELIX and MATCH components, giving Dimitry a clear understanding of what a properly integrated and professionally tuned system could achieve.

When it was time to upgrade the Porsche, he gave us something extremely valuable: creative and technical freedom.

The objective was not simply to make the Bose system louder. We wanted to create a refined, powerful and highly detailed audio system that preserved the factory appearance, respected the complexity of the Targa roof mechanism and delivered an experience worthy of the vehicle.

The project was completed across two stages.

The first stage transformed the speakers, amplification, soundproofing and system control. After Dimitry spent time listening to the vehicle, the second stage focused on creating the deeper, stronger and more authoritative low-frequency performance he preferred.

Understanding the Porsche 911 Targa Bose System

Upgrading a modern Porsche is very different from installing audio equipment in a conventional vehicle.

The factory Bose system is connected to multiple vehicle systems, and every modification must be approached carefully to maintain the original functions, factory wiring and reliability of the vehicle.

The Targa introduces another major challenge: space.

When the roof is opened, the mechanism and roof panel occupy a significant section of the rear compartment. Any amplifier, power distribution system, subwoofer or custom enclosure must be positioned without interfering with the roof operation or reducing the safety margins engineered into the vehicle.

This meant every component required careful planning before installation began.

Stage One: Creating the Foundation

We began by safely disconnecting the vehicle’s battery and carefully removing the necessary interior panels.

The first major stage was acoustic treatment.

Four-Layer Front Door Soundproofing

Both front doors received an extensive four-layer soundproofing treatment.

Soundproofing is an essential part of a premium audio installation because the speaker cannot perform correctly when energy is being lost through flexible door panels, vibration and unwanted resonance.

The treatment helps to:

  • Reduce vibration from the door skins and trims
  • Improve midbass impact and definition
  • Lower road and mechanical noise entering the cabin
  • Create a more controlled environment for the speakers
  • Improve clarity without requiring excessive amplifier power

We also treated accessible areas around the rear roof-storage compartment where the original HELIX U 10A active subwoofers would be positioned.

Our objective was to maximise acoustic control without unnecessarily dismantling parts of the Targa roof mechanism.

The soundproofing process alone required approximately two days of careful preparation and installation.

Mapping and Bypassing the Factory Bose System

Once the acoustic treatment was completed, we moved to the electrical integration.

Although a universal plug-and-play interface was available for the vehicle, it did not provide a complete vehicle-specific solution for every channel we needed to access.

We used the interface to preserve the original Porsche connections, but each required Bose audio channel still had to be identified, mapped and bypassed individually.

This stage involved:

  • Identifying the factory speaker channels
  • Testing signal behaviour
  • Creating a complete wiring map
  • Building the customised bypass harness
  • Maintaining the original factory connectors
  • Routing new speaker and signal wiring
  • Installing dedicated power and ground distribution

Because the rear bass system would require substantial current, the power supply and distribution points had to be designed with appropriate capacity and protection.

Obtaining the information from the vehicle, completing the signal mapping and manufacturing the customised harness required another one to two full days.

A Challenging Targa Interior

Removing the front A-pillar trims in a conventional Porsche 911 is already a task that requires patience and experience.

In the Targa, the removable roof design makes the surrounding trim system considerably more complex.

Every panel had to be removed without marking the leather, damaging clips or affecting the roof seals and interior alignment.

This is where experience with premium and exotic vehicles becomes particularly important. The quality of the finished installation depends just as much on how the vehicle is disassembled and reassembled as it does on the components being installed.

HELIX Ci7 Front Soundstage

For the front soundstage, we selected the HELIX Ci7 series.

Although we had initially considered several different configurations, the Ci7 system became the strongest approach for this particular vehicle. It provided the level of resolution, control and refinement required to match Dimitry’s expectations.

The front upgrade included:

  • HELIX Ci7 tweeters
  • HELIX Ci7 front midrange speakers
  • HELIX Ci7 centre-channel speaker
  • HELIX Ci5 8-inch front woofers

The Ci7 tweeters and midrange speakers were installed in the original factory locations, preserving the Porsche interior and OEM appearance.

The 8-inch HELIX front woofers were selected to improve midbass authority and provide a stronger acoustic foundation through the front of the vehicle.

This was particularly important because our objective was to create a system that projected the music naturally from the dashboard rather than making the listener feel that the sound was coming from individual door speakers.

Rear Speaker Integration

During the rear-speaker inspection, we discovered that the factory Bose system used dual-voice-coil rear midrange drivers combined with separate tweeters.

There was no suitable direct-replacement midrange speaker that would provide the integration and reliability we wanted without introducing unnecessary compromises.

Instead of replacing components simply for the sake of saying that everything had been changed, we made the technically stronger decision:

  • Retain the original dual-voice-coil rear midrange speakers
  • Upgrade the rear tweeters with HELIX Ci7 components
  • Integrate and balance the rear channels through the DSP

The rear speakers were not intended to dominate the system. Their role was to add subtle ambience, width and cabin fill while allowing the front soundstage to remain the primary focus.

MATCH Up 10 DSP Amplification and Factory Integration

The system was controlled by a MATCH UP 10DSP amplifier with CAN Bus integration and an MEC analogue input extension card.

The DSP allowed us to manage each channel individually, including:

  • Speaker output levels
  • Time alignment
  • Electronic crossover points
  • Frequency response
  • Phase relationships
  • Centre-channel integration
  • Front-to-rear balance
  • Subwoofer integration

The installation was completed using the customised plug-and-play harness so the factory Porsche wiring remained protected and the system could be integrated without cutting the original vehicle loom.

The Initial Dual HELIX U 10A Bass System

Space inside the Targa was extremely limited, particularly once the roof was stored.

For the first stage, we installed two HELIX U 10A active slimline subwoofers in the safe area beneath the roof-storage zone.

The shallow construction of the U 10A allowed both subwoofers to fit within the available space while maintaining the required clearance for the Targa roof mechanism.

Using two active subwoofers gave the system:

  • Better distribution of low frequencies across the cabin
  • More output than a single compact active subwoofer
  • A clean installation without sacrificing the usable interior
  • Independent bass capability in an extremely restricted space

The system also included a HELIX Conductor installed in a customised holder.

The Conductor gave Dimitry convenient control over functions such as master volume, subwoofer level and stored DSP sound profiles, depending on the configuration selected during tuning.

Why We Tune on the Final Day

For complex active audio systems, we prefer to complete the physical installation and leave the critical tuning session until the final day.

DSP tuning demands concentration and careful listening. Working on it with rested ears helps us make more accurate decisions regarding tonal balance, vocal position, staging height, bass integration and overall system energy.

After approximately six days of installation work, the Porsche was ready for its initial tuning session.

The result was immediately noticeable.

The front soundstage became wider and more focused. Vocals were positioned naturally in front of the driver, the midbass became faster and more controlled, and the overall tonal balance was far more precise than the original Bose system.

Dimitry collected the vehicle and spent the following week experiencing the system in real-world driving conditions.

Stage Two: Dimitry Wanted More Bass Authority

The first-stage system delivered clarity, staging and balanced bass performance.

However, Dimitry had previously owned vehicles fitted with significantly more powerful subwoofer systems. After living with the Porsche for approximately one week, he decided he wanted greater low-frequency authority.

This is an important part of building a genuinely personalised sound system.

There is no single bass level that suits every customer. Some listeners prioritise absolute detail and subtle low-frequency extension, while others want to physically experience the impact and weight of every bass note.

Dimitry wanted both.

We inspected the available space again, took detailed measurements and began exploring a customised enclosure.

Initially, we considered using a 6-inch subwoofer due to the severe space limitations. However, we did not believe it would provide the level of output and low-frequency extension Dimitry expected.

We presented the challenge to him, and once again he gave us complete freedom to develop the right solution.

Designing a Custom Porsche Targa Subwoofer Enclosure

The two HELIX U 10A active subwoofers were removed and the development of a completely customised sealed enclosure began.

The final Stage 2 system used:

  • A HELIX 10-inch shallow-mount subwoofer
  • A customised sealed enclosure
  • MATCH UP 1FX mono subwoofer amplifier
  • Custom power and signal integration
  • DSP calibration and phase alignment

Designing the enclosure was one of the most challenging parts of the entire project.

The available dimensions were extremely restricted. The enclosure had to:

  • Clear the Targa roof mechanism
  • Fit securely within the available rear compartment
  • Avoid contact with surrounding interior panels
  • Provide sufficient internal air volume
  • Allow the subwoofer to operate safely
  • Remain serviceable
  • Look consistent with the quality of the Porsche interior
  • Deliver the acoustic result Dimitry expected

Several enclosure concepts and prototypes were created before we achieved the correct combination of fitment, internal volume, structural strength and acoustic performance.

Small dimensional changes made the difference between an enclosure fitting correctly and interfering with the surrounding vehicle components.

This is why custom fabrication cannot be rushed. A premium result often involves testing, refining and rebuilding until every limitation has been addressed.

Why We Chose a Sealed Enclosure

For this Porsche, a sealed subwoofer enclosure provided the best balance between space efficiency, sound quality and predictable control.

A properly designed sealed enclosure delivers bass that is:

  • Tight and controlled
  • Consistent from note to note
  • Accurate across different musical styles
  • Easier to integrate with the front speakers
  • Less dependent on exaggerated output around one narrow frequency range

The objective was not to create uncontrolled vibration or bass that overwhelmed the rest of the system.

We wanted the low frequencies to have genuine power while remaining connected to the music.

The MATCH UP 1FX provided the dedicated power required to control the shallow 10-inch HELIX subwoofer, while the DSP allowed us to integrate it precisely with the front woofers and the rest of the system.

Final DSP Tuning

Once the custom enclosure and amplifier installation were completed, the entire system was tuned again.

Adding a new subwoofer is not simply a matter of connecting an amplifier and increasing the bass level.

The tuning process required us to reassess:

  • Subwoofer crossover frequency
  • Front-woofer crossover points
  • Phase alignment
  • Signal delay
  • Bass level
  • Cabin resonances
  • Transition between midbass and sub-bass
  • Balance between impact and accuracy

The final result delivered the low-frequency energy Dimitry had been looking for without sacrificing the clarity and front-stage precision achieved during the first stage.

Bass notes became deeper, more solid and more consistent. The system could reproduce powerful electronic music with authority while still maintaining the texture and control required for acoustic recordings, rock, jazz and vocal-focused music.

OEM-Style Ambient Lighting

Alongside the audio transformation, we installed a subtle ambient lighting system through the door panels and dashboard trim.

The lighting was carefully integrated to complement the Porsche interior rather than overpower it.

The objective was to make the upgrade look as though it belonged in the vehicle from the factory.

Combined with the customised audio system, the ambient lighting helped transform the cabin into an even more exclusive environment, particularly during night driving.

The Final Result

After another six days of custom fabrication, installation and tuning, Dimitry returned to collect the Porsche.

This time, the reaction confirmed that we had achieved the result he wanted.

The system retained the refinement, precision and imaging developed during the first stage, but now had the bass authority and physical impact that had been missing for his personal listening preferences.

The customised sealed enclosure produced strong, consistent low frequencies while remaining controlled on every note.

Nothing looked out of place.

The Porsche retained its factory character, the Targa roof remained fully operational, the factory connections were protected and the HELIX Conductor gave Dimitry convenient control over the system.

This project was not about installing the greatest possible number of components.

It was about understanding the owner, understanding the vehicle and continuing to refine the system until both came together.

The result was a Porsche 911 Targa that remained visually elegant and unmistakably Porsche, but now delivered a completely different musical experience.

Subtly, carefully and without compromising the vehicle, we transformed it into a true automotive work of musical art.
