Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special Edition: A Complete Audio System Rebuild with MATCH DSP

From a problematic aftermarket installation to a professionally engineered motorcycle audio system. A two-week transformation by MC Audio Sydney.

Some motorcycles deserve more than an ordinary sound system upgrade.

When this special-edition Harley-Davidson Street Glide arrived at our Sydney workshop, it already had an aftermarket audio installation. Unfortunately, several issues needed attention, and the quality of the existing wiring and installation did not meet the standards we expect from a premium audio system.

What initially appeared to be an opportunity to improve the motorcycle's audio performance quickly became a much more ambitious project.

Rather than adding new equipment to an installation that was already compromised, we decided to rebuild the system from the ground up.

The result was a two-week project involving extensive disassembly, removal of the previous amplifiers, complete audio rewiring, upgraded power distribution and the installation of two advanced amplifiers from MATCH by Audiotec Fischer.

This is the story of how we approached one of our more demanding Harley-Davidson audio projects.

The Initial Challenge: An Audio System That Needed More Than Repairs

The Harley-Davidson Street Glide is a distinctive touring motorcycle, combining unmistakable styling with the comfort and technology designed for long-distance riding.

For owners who appreciate music, the audio system becomes an important part of that experience.

However, motorcycle audio systems present challenges that differ significantly from those of conventional cars.

Road noise, wind, engine vibration, restricted installation space and exposure to changing weather conditions all need to be considered when designing an audio upgrade.

In this particular Street Glide, the situation was even more complicated.

The motorcycle arrived with several existing problems. The previous installation included amplifiers positioned inside the saddlebags, along with wiring that did not meet our standards for a professionally engineered audio system.

At MC Audio Sydney, our approach is simple: high-quality equipment deserves an equally high-quality installation.

Installing powerful amplifiers without addressing the underlying wiring and electrical infrastructure would not have delivered the standard of result we wanted.

The solution was to start again.

Stage One: Removing the Previous Amplifiers and Installation

Our first major task was removing the existing amplifiers from the motorcycle's saddlebags.

The saddlebags provide valuable installation space, but every component positioned in these compartments needs to be considered carefully.

Beyond the equipment itself, we needed to understand how the previous system had been connected, how power was distributed and how the audio wiring travelled throughout the motorcycle.

As we progressed through the disassembly, it became clear that this would not be a straightforward amplifier replacement.

Removing the existing system required patience and detailed attention to the motorcycle's construction.

Unlike a conventional vehicle, where certain interior panels can provide relatively straightforward access to electrical components, the Street Glide demanded a more involved approach.

Our priority was to access the necessary areas carefully and build a system that would meet our expectations for quality, serviceability and integration.

Stage Two: A Complete Audio Wiring Rebuild

One of the most important decisions in this project was to replace the existing audio wiring.

Wiring is often the least visible part of a sound system, yet it plays a fundamental role in how the system operates.

Even premium amplifiers cannot compensate for poorly planned electrical connections, unsuitable cable routing or inadequate power distribution.

Instead of reusing the previous installation, we rebuilt the audio wiring infrastructure.

This allowed us to approach the new system with a more organised electrical layout and establish a better foundation for the upgraded equipment.

For a motorcycle audio installation, several engineering considerations are particularly important:

  • Appropriate cable selection for the electrical load
  • Correct protection of power circuits
  • Careful routing around moving components and potential abrasion points
  • Secure connections in areas exposed to vibration
  • Separation and organisation of power and audio signal wiring
  • Accessibility for future inspection and maintenance
  • These principles are essential when developing a motorcycle audio system intended for regular use.

The objective was not simply to make everything work again. It was to establish a higher standard of installation throughout the motorcycle.

Stage Three: Upgrading the Power Distribution System

With the original wiring removed, we introduced a new power distribution block for the audio installation.

Power distribution becomes particularly important when multiple amplifiers are operating within the same system.

A carefully planned distribution arrangement allows the electrical supply to be organised around the requirements of each connected amplifier, with circuit protection and cable sizing considered as part of the overall design.

For this Street Glide, the new distribution block became a key element of the rebuilt installation.

It supported our goal of creating a cleaner, more structured electrical system rather than relying on the previous arrangement.

This was not the most visually dramatic element of the project, but from an engineering perspective, it was one of the most important.

Stage Four: Introducing the MATCH UP 6DSP Amplifier

The centrepiece of the new audio architecture was the MATCH UP 6DSP, developed by German automotive audio specialist Audiotec Fischer.

The MATCH UP 6DSP combines six channels of amplification with an integrated seven-channel, 64-bit digital signal processor.

This provides far greater flexibility than a conventional amplifier.

Digital signal processing allows the installer to manage essential aspects of audio reproduction, including frequency response, crossover settings, channel levels and time alignment.

These capabilities are particularly valuable in a motorcycle, where speaker positions, listening distance and the surrounding acoustic environment can create significant challenges.

Rather than relying exclusively on the characteristics of the amplifiers and speakers, a DSP-based system provides the tools needed to develop a more controlled and balanced audio configuration.

The MATCH UP 6DSP also features compact construction and efficient Class GD amplification, making it an interesting platform for installations where available space must be carefully managed.

For this Street Glide, selecting a DSP amplifier was about creating a system with both performance potential and meaningful control over the audio signal.

Stage Five: Additional Amplification with the MATCH UP 1FX

To complement the MATCH UP 6DSP, we selected the MATCH UP 1FX, a compact, high-performance mono amplifier.

The UP 1FX uses Class D technology and is designed to provide substantial output power in a relatively small enclosure.

According to Audiotec Fischer, the amplifier supports operation down to a 1-ohm load and offers up to 1,000 watts RMS under its specified conditions.

Its dedicated mono-channel architecture makes it particularly suitable for demanding low-frequency applications, while its compact dimensions provide greater flexibility when planning an installation.

In a system where space is limited, every component needs to justify its position.

The combination of multi-channel DSP amplification and dedicated mono amplification gives the system a flexible foundation for developing a more sophisticated audio setup.

For this project, our focus was on selecting equipment that could work together as part of a carefully planned installation, rather than simply adding more amplifiers.

Two Weeks of Disassembly, Rewiring and Rebuilding

One of the most demanding aspects of this Harley-Davidson Street Glide project was the time involved.

The complete process took approximately two weeks.

The challenge was not simply installing the new equipment. It was everything required to prepare the motorcycle for that installation.

Removing previously fitted components, disassembling the necessary sections, replacing the wiring and designing the new electrical arrangement all added complexity.

Each stage needed to work with the motorcycle's existing construction.

With a special-edition machine, protecting the appearance and integrity of the motorcycle was also an important consideration.

A premium installation should never look like an afterthought.

It should respect the vehicle, incorporate the technology intelligently and provide the owner with an audio system that feels appropriate for the motorcycle.

This is the same philosophy we apply to our luxury automotive audio installations, from Porsche and BMW to Mercedes-Benz and other premium vehicles.

The platform may be different, but our engineering standards remain the same.

Why Professional Motorcycle Audio Installation Matters

Upgrading a Harley-Davidson sound system involves more than selecting an amplifier with an impressive power rating.

A successful installation requires a balanced approach to electrical engineering, component selection, physical integration and acoustic performance.

In particular, the system must be designed around the conditions in which the motorcycle will operate.

Electrical reliability

Correctly selected cables, appropriate protection and secure connections are fundamental to a dependable installation.

Audio processing and control

DSP technology provides greater control over the audio signal and allows the sound system to be configured according to the speaker arrangement and listening environment.

Space management

Motorcycles have limited room for aftermarket equipment. Careful planning helps avoid unnecessary compromises to practicality.

Long-term serviceability

An organised electrical installation makes future inspection, troubleshooting and upgrades easier.

At MC Audio, these considerations are part of what separates a carefully engineered audio system from a basic component installation.

The Final Result: A New Foundation for the Street Glide

After two weeks of work, this special-edition Harley-Davidson Street Glide had undergone much more than an amplifier upgrade.

The previous amplifiers had been removed, the existing audio wiring replaced and the electrical distribution reorganised to support a new dual-amplifier system.

At the heart of the installation were the MATCH UP 6DSP and MATCH UP 1FX amplifiers.

What began as a motorcycle with several existing audio issues became a comprehensive engineering project focused on creating a cleaner, more capable and better-organised system.

The most important transformation was not necessarily the equipment that could be seen.

It was the work behind the installation.

The planning, the disassembly, the wiring and the attention to detail were all essential parts of the finished project.

Sometimes the most significant audio upgrade is not about adding more equipment. It is about rebuilding everything correctly.
