There is something special about a Mazda MX-5. Light, agile, driver-focused. And when it comes in one of Mazda’s unique signature colours, it becomes instantly iconic.
Harrison recently acquired his MX-5 and reached out to us wanting one key improvement: proper bass. The factory low end felt completely lost, especially with the roof down. Anyone who owns a convertible knows the challenge. Once the top drops, bass response disappears quickly if the system is not designed properly.
🎯 The Challenge
The MX-5 presents two main limitations:
• Extremely limited space
• Convertible cabin with high external noise intrusion
That combination requires precision planning. Throwing in a random subwoofer is not the solution. It needs to be compact, controlled, and engineered specifically for the vehicle’s environment.

We presented Harrison with several premium options including Focal, JL Audio, and HELIX.
After discussing output expectations, enclosure size, and musical preferences, he chose the HELIX U 10A – 10” Active Subwoofer. For a small cabin like the MX-5, this unit is exceptionally efficient. It delivers tight, controlled bass without overwhelming the vehicle’s acoustics.
However, installation was not straightforward.
To ensure zero vibration and absolutely no rattle noise, we:
• Fabricated custom mounting brackets
• Reinforced anchoring points
• Routed dedicated power cabling with proper protection
• Applied correct insulation and isolation materials
• Tuned the gain structure carefully for convertible dynamics
It took longer than a standard install because we refused to compromise on refinement. In a small sports car, even the smallest vibration can ruin the experience.

The transformation was immediate.
With the roof up, the bass is full and balanced.
With the roof down, it remains punchy and defined.
No intrusive modifications. No loss of practicality. No visible compromise. Just clean, controlled low-frequency performance that complements the driving experience.
