Premium Sound for a Premium SUV – David’s BMW X5 M50i Upgrade
At MC Audio Rockdale, we’ve worked on countless BMW audio upgrades, and when David found us online, he knew we were the right team for the job. He had just picked up his BMW X5 M50i, which came equipped with the Harman Kardon sound system, expecting premium audio quality. While the system was decent, it didn’t fully meet his expectations—he wanted richer sound, better clarity, and more volume without distortion.
After discussing different options and testing the current setup, we put together a custom solution that would enhance his listening experience beyond what BMW offered from the factory—for less than what the dealership upgrade cost.
The Audio Upgrade Plan
To achieve audio quality, we upgraded every major speaker component in the BMW X5 M50i:

With this setup, we were aiming for powerful yet natural sound reproduction, improved low-end response, and precise tuning control.
Installation Process – The Journey to High-End Audio
Day 1 – Speaker Installation
We began on Saturday, starting with the front and rear speakers. The biggest challenge was the rear-seat embedded speakers, which required careful disassembly to replace with the new MATCH components. Precision is key to maintaining factory aesthetics and fitment, ensuring that no panel clips were broken during the process.
By the end of the day, we had successfully installed all the main speakers, setting the foundation for a complete audio transformation.
Day 2 – Subwoofers & Amplifier Integration
On Monday, we tackled the underseat subwoofers—one of the trickiest parts of the installation. Since BMW’s factory subwoofer enclosures have a specific structure, we had to carefully install the MATCH W8BMW-S 8” subs while maintaining the original mounts. This ensures that the system not only sounds phenomenal but also retains a fully stock look.
The MATCH UP 10DSP amplifier was next. We had to remove the left panel of the trunk, where the Active Sound Design (ASD) module was located. Without the correct harness adapter, bypassing this module would have been extremely difficult, potentially leaving unwanted engine noise feedback in the system. However, with our MATCH PP-BMW 1.9RAM-HK harness, we successfully integrated the new amp while eliminating artificial engine noise, which can be enjoyable at first but becomes exhausting on long drives.
Day 3 – Precision DSP Tuning & Calibration
By Tuesday morning, all the hardware was installed, and we moved on to the most important part of the process—fine-tuning the sound. Using professional measurement microphones and Audiotec Fischer’s DSP tools, we spent three hours calibrating the system to achieve perfect frequency balance, clean bass response, and crystal-clear vocals.
This step is what truly separates a good audio upgrade from a great one. A high-end DSP allows precise tuning for the driver’s and passenger’s positions, ensuring that everyone in the car gets a premium listening experience.
The Final Result – A Happy Client & A Transformed Sound System
When David came to pick up his BMW X5 M50i, he was eager to hear the difference. The moment we played his favorite tracks, he was blown away. The depth, clarity, and power of the sound were beyond anything he had experienced before—even compared to factory-upgraded sound systems from BMW.
